Job Description:
- Set up and maintain the adult literacy office for the Community Reading Program
- Recruit and train volunteer tutors
- Recruit and assess literacy and ESL learners for one-on-one programming
- Match and support tutor/learner pairs
- Select and contract part time ESL instructors
- Provide support and resources for part time ESL instructors
- Recruit, register, and assess ESL learners for ESL class programming
- Maintain the resource library, purchasing resources as appropriate
- Consult with existing and potential partners to identify literacy gaps in the community
- Attend interagency meetings and make presentations to community groups to promote the adult literacy program, the ESL classes, and the Slave Lake Adult Education Committee
- Promote literacy awareness in the community through events such as International
- Literacy Day and National Family Literacy Day
- Attend the yearly Literacy Alberta symposium and the regional meetings
- Attend New Coordinator’s Training and other regional training as available
- Evaluate the learners’ progress and the effectiveness of the program on an ongoing basis
- Prepare final report and business plan according to funders’ requirements
- Establish and maintain yearly budgets
- Prepare monthly reports and attend the Slave Lake Adult Education Committee meetings
Qualifications:
- Adult education background preferred
- Experience and/or education in teaching ESL preferred
- Previous experience in facilitating groups preferred
- Excellent listening, written and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge and experience in administrative functions
- Good working knowledge of local community programs and agencies an asset
- Ability to work independently with no supervision
Other details:
- This position is based on approximately 25 hours per week
- Wage will be $20 to $25 per hour, depending on experience
- This position operates under the Slave Lake Adult Education Committee
