National Adult Literacy Database

Free website will help people build their careers using essential skills

There’s an exciting new national initiative just around the corner and it’s available to everyone (including training organizations) at no cost.

Build Your Career with Essential Skills™ connects people with the tools and resources they need to be successful at work – including 50 profiles recently updated by HRSDC, online assessments and customized test results reports. It also features instant customized learning plans that link the learner to classroom-based upgrading in their local area and free online resources.

Visitors may go to http://en.careers.essentialskillsgroup.com, but training organizations are asked not to use it with clients prior to the official launch on November 14.  The French version will also be available in early November.

How to become part of this initiative:

  • Register your organization as a provider of classroom-based training. You will be listed on customized learning plans for people who reside in your local area. The focus is on classroom-based essential skills / foundation skills / adult basic literacy training and/or occupation-specific training (e.g. apprenticeship training). To register, click on http://campuses.careers.essentialskillsgroup.com.
    • Note: If you have already registered on the Ontario College Sector Committees’ Essential Skills website for Red Seal Trades (http://csc.essentialskillsgroup.com), you are automatically included on this new website. You do not need to register twice.
  • Provide access to your free online learning materials. Your materials will be listed on learning plans for all website users who require those skills to reach their career goals. The focus is on reading, document use and numeracy resources. (Contact information below)

Many groups have generously contributed essential skills content to this initiative. They include Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, the Industry Training Authority of British Columbia, the College Sector Committee for Adult Upgrading, and the Canadian Plastics Sector Council of Canada.
