12 NWT residents graduate from Corrections Northern Recruit Training Program

This program was developed in 2009 because the Corrections Service faced significant challenges recruiting northerners with the basic qualifications to work in the corrections field. Successful graduates will continue to the final part of their program: paid casual staff positions that include a workplace orientation where they obtain direct on-the-job experience.

A TESL Canada reminder about its 2012 conference

TESL Canada invites you to submit a proposal to present at the TESL Canada 2012 conference October 11-13, 2012.  The conference will be held at Thompson Rivers University, Kamloops, British Columbia. The theme for the conference, TESL Interiors: Landscapes of Literacies and Language, is one reflective of the multiple dimensions of communication and language education.  Presentations can cover any of the diverse areas of inquiry related to TEAL and Teacher Education.

Nova Scotia Workplace Education: Program outlined in 10 short videos

Workplace Education programs in Nova Scotia are delivered through the Workplace Initiatives Division in the Department of Labour and Advanced Education. The program operates as a partnership between the Nova Scotia government and employers to help increase skills, retain workers and provide tools to build confidence and productivity.

Canadian students make the grade in math according to new CMEC report

A major new report released by the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC), indicates that over 90 per cent of Canadian students in Grade 8 are achieving at or above their expected level of performance in mathematics. Almost half are achieving above their expected level.

A total of 4,592 children (10-12-year olds) in 44 countries - from Afghanistan to Canada to Zambia - were asked six open-ended questions ranging from what their favourite pastime is to what they'd do to protect children if they were leader of their country.

CMEC releases report to Canadians on official languages in education

The report was compiled jointly by provinces and territories through CMEC with financial assistance from the Government of Canada. It describes the wide variety of programs, initiatives and projects in minority-language education and second-language instruction that were carried out in provinces and territories between 2005 and 2009.

Nova Scotia introduces amendments to its Library Act

Nova Scotia is amending the Libraries Act to reflect the move of the Nova Scotia Provincial Library to the Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage announced in January.
