National Adult Literacy Database

This study kit includes literacy activities that can be used with adult learners during an election period. The focus is on helping learners make informed decisions about the election and, at the same time, develop their vocabulary and their understanding of elections and the democratic process.  

VANCOUVER, March 28 /CNW/ - Community-based service providers and advocates for unemployed workers in BC share serious concerns about changes by the BC Ministry of Social Development to core employment assistance programs which could see current specialized services shift to generic self-serve programs. Provincial service associations have come together to request that the Ministry make targeted changes to the model so that job-seekers and employers are best served.

The LEARN program has successfully assisted thousands of adult learners looking to improve their literacy skills. It allows Canadian adults to easily access information about local literacy organizations and help them move forward in finding an appropriate learning program.

Training sessions will be held to introduce Read Forward, a new adult reading resource developed by the Centre for Foundational Learning at Bow Valley College in Calgary.

The 2011 Census Adult Education Kit provides an excellent introduction to the census. It explains what a census is, how the 2011 Census will work, and why the census is important. Adult students will learn how their personal information is protected, and how to seek help if they have difficulty answering the questions.

International Adult Learners’ Week (IALW), an initiative that celebrates adult learners and the joy of lifelong learning, will be observed in Canada from April 2 to 9, 2011.

A location for a provincial autism centre was made official when the Province of British Columbia and the City of Vancouver announced they have secured a home for the Pacific Autism Family Centre at Sunny Hill Health Centre in Vancouver.

A national campaign aimed at enriching volunteer experiences for Canadians and strengthening the volunteer sector has been launched by Volunteer Canada, the voice of volunteerism in Canada, and Manulife Financial, whose signature cause is to encourage volunteerism nationwide.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has announced support for Pathways to Education Canada, a charitable organization dedicated to reducing poverty and its effects by increasing access to post-secondary education for disadvantaged youth.

The Northwest Territories Literacy Council has developed an interactive learning tool titled Essential Skills at Work in the North. Funded by the Government of Canada and the Northwest Territories Department of Education, Culture and Employment, the tool is designed to help northerners learn what it takes to succeed in various jobs.
