General election in Canada on May 2, 2011: What you need to know

The National Adult Literacy Database (NALD) supports the activities of its partners by promoting national and provincial/territorial events in the fields of adult literacy and education, family literacy, workplace learning and essential skills. One of these key occasions is International Adult Learners’ Week (IALW) being observed this year from April 2 to 9.

2011 Census Adult Education Kit available

The 2011 Census Adult Education Kit provides an excellent introduction to the census. It explains what a census is, how the 2011 Census will work, and why the census is important. Adult students will learn how their personal information is protected, and how to seek help if they have difficulty answering the questions.

In addition to lessons on firing a gun and searching for improvised explosive devices, Canadian soldiers will also be teaching Afghan forces to read, write and perform basic medicine when the country’s new training mission begins later this year.

To mark the upcoming international celebration, adult learners at UWinnipeg were recently invited to share their personal learning journeys – how and why they returned to pursue post-secondary education. A student at UWinnipeg is considered to be an “adult learner” if he/she has taken a break of three or more years from formal education before starting or resuming university.

Ontario Literacy Coalition launches new Spotlight on Learning website

OLC’s Spotlight on Learning:  Becoming Agents of Change conference was held in October 2010 in Toronto. This new website is designed not only to highlight the conference, but also to feed the momentum and energy in the field with continued learning, news updates, and stories of change that have been inspired by learning. Full of workshop videos, resources, downloads and much more, this website encourages a continuum of learning.

Manitoba increases funding for adult literacy programs, services

Manitoba has increased its funding for adult literacy and adult learning centre programs by $700,000 annually, bringing total funding support to almost $20.6 million, Premier Greg Selinger announced recently.
