Frontier College President Sherry Campbell is inspired by the continued growth of the Scrabble Corporate Challenge, now in its ninth year. The premier of New Brunswick has highlighted his government's $2.5 million investment in Elementary Literacy Inc., a non-profit foundation, to support its Elementary Literacy Friends/Communauté-littératie-enfants-francophones volunteer tutoring programs. Job numbers edge downwards in January: Statistics Canada Labour Force Survey

Following two months of gains, employment in Canada decreased slightly in January (-22,000). A decline in the number of people looking for work pushed the unemployment rate down 0.1 percentage points to 7.0%.

J.D. Irving Ltd. plans to hire 6,500 people with approximately 2,700 in N.B.

J.D. Irving Ltd. is looking for 6,500 new employees over the next couple of years, including more than 2,700 in New Brunswick. The positions will be in various sectors of the company's operations such as shipbuilding, railroad, forest products, the port and retail.

Employers can now apply for Canada Summer Jobs funding which will create thousands of job opportunities for students across the country, said Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development. One-Job Pledge initiative launched in N.B. to stimulate economy

The New Brunswick government is creating a new initiative, called the One-Job Pledge, to help businesses create quality jobs and new opportunities for recent graduates in the province. Under the Pledge, businesses that qualify will receive a one-year wage incentive when they hire, a permanent, full-time employee who graduated from a post-secondary institution in the past four years.

Family literacy activities contribute to Canada's success

This year's Family Literacy Day celebration (January 27) came just weeks after very encouraging news about literacy and families in Canada. Results from the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study show that Canadian parents have one of the highest levels of involvement in literacy-related activities with their preschool-age children. "The results ... confirm that Canadian parents are doing an excellent job in fostering a culture of literacy in the home," said Ramona Jennex, Chair of CMEC and Nova Scotia's Minister of Education.

New immigration program to attract job creators to Canada

Canada will launch a brand new program on April 1 to recruit innovative immigrant entrepreneurs who will create new jobs and spur economic growth, Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney has announced. "Our new Start-Up Visa will help make Canada the destination of choice for the world’s best and brightest to launch their companies," he said.

About the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) is the first of two bulletins that cover the highly anticipated international survey of adult literacy, numeracy and problem-solving skills.

Help inform and shape thinking around policy, practice and research as we prepare for PIAAC. The Institute will examine and compare the learning from IALS and ALL across Canada and other countries, and explore how we can make the most effective use of the soon-to-be released PIAAC results. We will look at the new segments – problem-solving in technology-rich environments and the reading components – and at the implications of changes in levels and cut-off.

UNB business students to benefit from teachings of Margaret Atwood

Canadian writer Margaret Atwood will participate in a new business course being offered this winter at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton. Entitled The Environment, Society and Business, the course will focus on issues of sustainability, and will include writings, films, and speakers from different disciplines including the arts, biology and business.
