National Adult Literacy Database

The government of Nova Scotia has supported the development and delivery of family literacy programs for more than a decade.

With a strong belief that every child’s first and most important teachers are their parents, the Regina Literacy Network promotes intergenerational family learning opportunities whenever it can. Family Literacy Day allows its members to celebrate the importance of family, relationships and learning with others across the country.

Several new themes emerged from the 2010 institute, specifically around questions of embedded teaching and learning and the qualifications and professionalism of workplace essential skills providers. The 2011 institute, June 27-29 in Montreal, will focus on these, as well as on the continuing preoccupation of engaging employers and learners.

The National Adult Literacy Database (NALD) is a proud supporter of family literacy in all its forms. Every year since 1999, on January 27, Family Literacy Day (FLD) is celebrated in communities throughout Canada with activities related to reading, writing and math. The NALD website has a section dedicated to FLD. This page has been recently updated and now contains reading suggestions from the NALD library for families.

Digital literacy is the ability to understand and use information and communication technology (ICT). It requires a working knowledge of computer software and being able to decipher sounds and visual representations, for example icons.
