For many people in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA), the commute to work or school costs a significant amount of time and money, while contributing to daily stress levels. Employers are recognizing that they have a role to play in managing this.

In his new free workshop for 2013, Tom Sticht reviews extensive data on intergenerational inequalities in education and economics. He also presents data from many studies to suggest that greater investments in the education of undereducated youth and adults, many of whom are parents or will become parents, can help break the multiple life cycles of inequalities in education and economic achievement.

New life awarded to Lowe's Toolbox for Education Grant Program

Skills/Compétences Canada, a national not-for-profit organization that actively promotes careers in skilled trades, has announced that Lowe's will be renewing its Toolbox for Education Grant Program for 2013. This will be the third year that Lowe's, in partnership with Skills/Compétences Canada, offers the program benefiting students and educators in Ontario and Alberta.

Workplace morale is high for most employees, according to new survey

The mood around the office water cooler is generally positive, new research suggests. In an Accountemps survey, more than half (54 per cent) of workers described the morale at their companies as somewhat good. Twenty-eight per cent of people said workplace morale is very good.

Are cuts to Aboriginal organizations hurting crucial research projects?

Over 100 eminent academics have signed a letter to Aboriginal and Northern Affairs Minister John Duncan demanding that core funding for Aboriginal organizations be restored to protect vital research projects underway. The signatories highlight that researchers partner with tribal councils, the National Aboriginal Health Organization, and other Aboriginal representative organizations to address "health, education and infrastructure issues that are preventing Canadian First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities from reaching their full potential."

Women in university research face gender equity challenges: report

A newly released report by the Council of Canadian Academies, entitled 'Strengthening Canada's Research Capacity: The Gender Dimension,' provides an assessment of the the factors that influence university research careers of women. This assessment was requested by the Minister of Industry in the fall of 2010 after the notable absence of female candidates for the prestigious Canada Excellence Research Chairs program.

Most Ontarians failing financial literacy test, new study shows

Out of 1,000 people surveyed for a new study from the Investor Education Fund (IEF), only 36 per cent scored a passing grade of more than 60 per cent when it came to testing their knowledge on topics such as financial fraud, RRSPs, mortgages and investing.

Canadians agree it's in our best interests to help homeless youth find employment

Raising the Roof has released the first report to explore the issue of unemployment among homeless youth in Canada. The report focuses on understanding how to motivate and support Canadian business to provide employment and skills training opportunities to disadvantaged youth or, essentially, to "take a chance" on these young people.

The Financial Literacy Month Video Contest is challenging you to create an original and inspiring video that shows and explains how you are saving for or managing your money to achieve a financial goal. Videos of all eligible participants will be evaluated for creativity, production quality and messaging by a panel of three judges selected by FCAC. The deadline for submissions is November 30.
