Grass Roots Press, in partnership with ABC Life Literacy Canada, is delighted to announce the September release of four new titles to the popular adult literacy Good Reads book series. Good Reads are original books by bestselling Canadian authors written for adult literacy and ESL learners.

Especially if you are traveling, this summer is a good time to give thought to how you and your organization will celebrate NWT Literacy Week in September. The NWT Literacy Council will be sending out packages in the mail and also placing information on their website as it becomes available.

Research shows that children who don’t read over the summer lose some of the literacy skills they learned during the year and have a difficult time adjusting to school in the fall. So try out these fun activities with youngsters this summer to keep their skills sharp all year long.

CMEC's pan-Canadian collaborative work continues on a number of issues, including regionally appropriate work on Aboriginal-education data collection and research, teacher education, knowledge transfer among all those involved in Aboriginal education, and ongoing discussion with the federal government on Aboriginal education.

It is a key priority for ETFO to support partnerships and initiatives that advance the rights and opportunities of Aboriginal children and youth. Since 2005, ETFO has supported the Lieutenant Governor's Summer Literacy Initiatives for isolated First Nations communities including most recently a campaign by Lieutenant Governor David Onley and Aski Nation Grand Chief Stan Beardy to secure e-readers for 5,000 children and youth in those communities.

Bill C-11 provides the legal framework necessary for students and teachers in elementary and secondary schools, colleges, and universities to use publicly available Internet materials in their educational pursuits. Consortium members believe this education amendment is essential at a time when governments are simultaneously increasing levels of connectivity, promoting skills development and innovation, and supporting the use of the Internet in classrooms.

In observance of National Aboriginal Day, events will include a sunrise ceremony, pancake breakfast, opening ceremonies at noon, the 8th Annual Walk/Run Race and a ball hockey tournament.

As summer begins, parents are left looking for new ways to keep their children entertained. With this in mind, Caryn Antonini, founder of the Early Lingo DVD series for children and a young mother, offers five summer activity tips for parents that not only keep children entertained but also engaged and learning.

The Canadian Council on Learning has taken steps to ensure that all of its work will continue to be accessible to Canadians. Through a formal agreement, the intellectual property of CCL has been transferred to the University of Ottawa.

Social and Enterprise Development Innovations (SEDI) has announced the 15 community organizations that have been awarded a total of $999,267 from the TD Financial Literacy Grant Fund to support financial literacy projects.

Each month NALD releases Library user statistics in a feature known as the Top 20 downloads. The report examines the number of NALD Library documents, in both English and French, which are viewed and downloaded by visitors to the websites NALD and BDAA.

On June 5, 2012, a think-tank of experts in youth, criminal justice and literacy will create a much-needed national literacy strategy. The forum will also discuss the results of a national public opinion poll which reveals, among other things, that the public believes education is more important than employment, recreation, or a stable home life, in terms of keeping youth out of jail.
