Free essential skills website designed to assist Ontario tradespeople (PDF)

The College Sector Committee for Adult Upgrading has developed an interactive essential skills website that helps existing and soon-to-be apprentices succeed at their training. Colleges, employers and other training providers can set up individual classroom cohorts where instructors manage how the tool is used by their learners. Workers and learners can self-register and use the website too.

Conforming to the recommendations made by 144 governments at the Sixth International Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA VI) in 2009, the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning has developed a reporting template which solicits data for the key areas identified in the Belém Framework for Action – policy, governance, finance, participation and quality.

Employment numbers setback signals hiccup in possible jobs recovery

The disappointing Statistics Canada numbers are in stark contrast to economists’ expectations that 12,000 new jobs would be created in October, after 61,000 new positions in September. The loss of 32,000 jobs in the private sector in October was the third consecutive monthly decline in that category.

Ottawa helps Aboriginal people in Meadow Lake develop skills

The Meadow Lake Tribal Council’s Foundations for Action project will assess 1,200 First Nations social assistance clients to determine their skills, education, and employment barriers. Following these initial assessments, over 950 clients will create action plans to enhance their job skills through additional training and employment support.

Literacy Action Week is held the first full week of November each year. It is the time when Literacy Nova Scotia and individuals and organizations who have an interest in supporting adult literacy share information with governments and the public about literacy and essential skills in their community. Meetings with government officials at all levels, information sessions and other activities are held throughout the province. LNS publishes a LAW Toolkit each year.

Manitoba is prospering but education numbers are weak: MB Check-Up 2011

The MB Check-Up shows that between 2005 and 2010, Manitoba had the highest percentage of youth who did not graduate from high school compared to the other western provinces, Ontario, and Canada. In 2010, this percentage rose by 0.9 percentage points to 11.6 per cent.

HR talk: The downside of hiring people just like you

Researchers at the Rotman School of Management (University of Toronto) have concluded that if interviewers adhere to a set of questions based on the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job – as opposed to engaging in a more casual, “get-to-know-you” session – it will reduce the biases that could slip through the hiring process.
