Study investigates Canadians' years to retirement, education levels

Canadians aged 50 and over are working later and delaying retirement, regardless of their level of education. However, because of a shorter life expectancy, the less-educated are likely to spend fewer years in retirement, a new report from Statistics Canada indicates.

The Quebec novelist, playwright and short story writer believes it is a challenge to get young people to read books these days. At 75, Mr. Carrier continues to exude passion for reading and literacy.

Over the past few years Canadian Literacy and Learning Network (CLLN) has undergone a number of changes. One of the most recent changes has been the transition from a representational board to a skills-based board. CLLN is currently seeking applicants for one of 10 board positions.

A report, authored by the IBM Center for Applied Insights, found that only one in 10 organizations has the skills needed to effectively apply advanced technologies such as business analytics, mobile computing, cloud computing and social business. In addition, nearly half of the educators and students surveyed feel there is a major gap in their institution's ability to meet the growing demand for advanced technology skills.

Community Service-Learning Awards competition underway

The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation is accepting submissions for the 2012 Community Service-Learning (CSL) Awards competition. CSL is a model of experiential learning that combines classroom learning with volunteer work to achieve community goals and instill in students a sense of civic engagement. Canadian businesses poorly prepared for era of big data, survey finds

Canadian businesses are at risk of falling behind international competitors in the era of Big Data. A recent survey conducted by IDC Canada and commissioned by SAS, has found that while 96 per cent of Canadian companies say the ability to process and act on data in real time is important, less than half (48%) have invested in the technologies to do so.

State of the L/ES field report from Canadian Literacy and Learning Network

The purpose of the State of the Literacy and Essential Skills Field report is to provide an overview of Literacy and Essential Skills across Canada from the unique perspective of CLLN and its national network partners, the provincial and territorial literacy coalitions. This is the first national environmental scan to be conducted by CLLN and as such it will inform the direction of future scans and will be the basis of further work to show how the Literacy and Essential Skills field is responding to trends.

On one hand, we are increasingly seeing jobs go unfilled for long stretches due to a lack of skilled applicants. Canada's small business owners admire older workers - with some concessions
