The Frye Festival, Atlantic Canada’s largest literary event, unveiled its spectacular line-up for the 2011 edition, which will be held from April 25 to May 1 in Moncton, N.B. Throughout Canada, having no family history of college or university is a significantly greater obstacle to higher education than is family income. In fact, according to two new studies, a single year of parental education has a greater positive impact on the likelihood of a son or daughter attending a post-secondary institution than does an extra $50,000 in parental income.

“The lessons from our hockey drama for Canadian learning are not encouraging. Our seeming impotence when confronted with external control diminishes a sense of community empowerment and participation.”

Citing a long list of new exceptions in the bill, including the expansion of so-called “fair dealing” to cover education, the coalition warns that C-32 will cause serious damage to markets for Canada’s cultural sector and significantly reduce current and future revenues on which creators depend for their income.

This year’s institute will focus on Workplace Literacy and Essential Skills: Embedding Practice, Preparing Providers, themes that emerged from the 2010 event. It will also continue to explore the most effective ways of engaging employers and learners.

Each year, the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan hosts an awards ceremony to honour people who demonstrate a spirit of dedication and commitment to literacy and learning in Saskatchewan. Awards will be presented on May 5 in Saskatoon.

With a strong belief that every child’s first and most important teachers are their parents, the Regina Literacy Network promotes intergenerational family learning opportunities whenever it can. Family Literacy Day allows its members to celebrate the importance of family, relationships and learning with others across the country.

Several new themes emerged from the 2010 institute, specifically around questions of embedded teaching and learning and the qualifications and professionalism of workplace essential skills providers. The 2011 institute, June 27-29 in Montreal, will focus on these, as well as on the continuing preoccupation of engaging employers and learners.
