Frontier College will participate in the launch of a new family reading activity in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Governor General’s Literary Awards. Summer family activities will run from June 30 to September 3 while Story Time at Rideau Hall will be held Thursdays and Saturdays from 1 to 3 p.m.

Frontier College is hosting conferences across the country to get educators, police, judges, policy-makers and others talking about the key role of literacy in youth crime prevention. "We have been told that literacy is not a crime prevention strategy. That's ridiculous. Literacy is one of the biggest ways to prevent crime," says Sherry Campbell, Frontier College president.

CMEC's pan-Canadian collaborative work continues on a number of issues, including regionally appropriate work on Aboriginal-education data collection and research, teacher education, knowledge transfer among all those involved in Aboriginal education, and ongoing discussion with the federal government on Aboriginal education.

It is a key priority for ETFO to support partnerships and initiatives that advance the rights and opportunities of Aboriginal children and youth. Since 2005, ETFO has supported the Lieutenant Governor's Summer Literacy Initiatives for isolated First Nations communities including most recently a campaign by Lieutenant Governor David Onley and Aski Nation Grand Chief Stan Beardy to secure e-readers for 5,000 children and youth in those communities.

Bill C-11 provides the legal framework necessary for students and teachers in elementary and secondary schools, colleges, and universities to use publicly available Internet materials in their educational pursuits. Consortium members believe this education amendment is essential at a time when governments are simultaneously increasing levels of connectivity, promoting skills development and innovation, and supporting the use of the Internet in classrooms.

SALN announces Aboriginal Literacy Award recipients

Carol Vandale, executive director of the Saskatchewan Aboriginal Literacy Network, has also announced that due to funding cutbacks the organization has laid off several staff, is closing its offices for July and August, and is searching for a smaller “donated” office location.

Educators demonstrate IT's impact on the classroom

CDW Canada's annual contest aims to encourage Canadian educators to use technology in their classrooms in new and innovative ways, and reward those who have succeeded in doing so. New to the contest this year was the video component, which offered educators the opportunity to submit videos that demonstrated how technology was being used to help students learn.

The Canadian Council on Learning has taken steps to ensure that all of its work will continue to be accessible to Canadians. Through a formal agreement, the intellectual property of CCL has been transferred to the University of Ottawa.

For a small, northern literacy organization, the NWT Literacy Council has an unexpectedly wide reach. The resources it produces to help literacy workers do their jobs are in demand across Canada and internationally. Many of the resources are among the documents most downloaded from the online library of the National Adult Literacy Database (NALD).

On June 5, 2012, a think-tank of experts in youth, criminal justice and literacy will create a much-needed national literacy strategy. The forum will also discuss the results of a national public opinion poll which reveals, among other things, that the public believes education is more important than employment, recreation, or a stable home life, in terms of keeping youth out of jail.

The Canadian Library Association (CLA) continues to embrace copyright legislation as one of its key priorities, as Canadian libraries play a vital role in providing Canadians access to all forms of material. Students with limited ability in English and those who are recent newcomers from war-torn countries will receive new dedicated support through the Manitoba English as an Additional Language (EAL) and the Intensive Newcomer Support grants, which will help them thrive and succeed in school, Education Minister Nancy Allan has announced.
