One hundred companies have been recognized as the Best Workplaces in Canada. They represent great diversity in terms of size, sector, industry and location. The judging panel? More than 57,000 Canadian employees.

Half of CIOs check in with work in the evening, on weekends

There's no clocking out for many chief information officers (CIOs), according to a recent Robert Half Technology survey. Nearly half (47 per cent) of CIOs said they check in with work "often" or "somewhat often" on evenings and weekends. Thirty per cent said they never check in outside normal business hours.

Deanna Allen, the executive director of Laubach Literacy New Brunswick, says the future of New Brunswick's economy depends on improved literacy. More than half of the province’s population needs to improve their reading and writing skills, she said.

Youth need right skills to address needs of job market: Ottawa

The YMCA of Northeast Avalon is receiving over $384,000 from the Skills Link program to help youth overcome barriers to employment. Skills Link is part of the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy.

Following an increase the previous month, employment declined by 55,000 in March, all in full-time work. The unemployment rate rose 0.2 percentage points to 7.2 per cent.

Targeted literacy programming and outreach for young single males on Ontario Works

Through a nine-month project, Literacy Link South Central talked to young single males on Ontario Works to find out about their interests and activities, especially as they relate to technology. This research informed the content of a set of four modules (with accompanying practitioner overviews that speak to the Ontario Adult Literacy Curriculum Framework (OALCF) and a general introduction guide).

It's not surprising to Lawrence Ferguson that half of the jobs created in the country in the past 12 months have been with workers 55 years and older. The 64-year-old meat cutter, at the Calgary Co-op in Rocky Ridge store, sees it every day at his job.

Opening a gateway for girls to enter the computer field

When Julia Geist was asked to draw a picture of a computer scientist last year, the 16-year-old sketched a businessman wearing glasses and a tie. Looking around at her classmates’ drawings, she saw similar depictions of men. Now, Ms. Geist said, “I see a computer scientist could be anyone” — including herself.

Adult Basic Education program in N.L. to be privatized

The Newfoundland and Labrador government is planning to privatize part of the College of the North Atlantic's curriculum. As outlined in the provincial budget, the college will lose its Adult Basic Education program. The program is currently offered at 12 campuses across the province.

BC Centre for Ability gets assistance from Government of Canada

The BC Centre for Ability will help people with disabilities connect with job opportunities or return to school thanks to over $4,500,000 provided through the federal Opportunities Fund. Through educational and work experience opportunities, the 535 project participants will develop the necessary job skills to obtain meaningful employment.
