NALD issues call for nominations for its fourth annual Innovative Technology Award

NALD established the award in 2010 to bring greater visibility to an exemplary or innovative technology product, project or service that benefits the field of adult literacy and essential skills.

One-Job Pledge initiative launched in N.B. to stimulate economy

The New Brunswick government is creating a new initiative, called the One-Job Pledge, to help businesses create quality jobs and new opportunities for recent graduates in the province. Under the Pledge, businesses that qualify will receive a one-year wage incentive when they hire, a permanent, full-time employee who graduated from a post-secondary institution in the past four years.

Family literacy activities contribute to Canada's success

This year's Family Literacy Day celebration (January 27) came just weeks after very encouraging news about literacy and families in Canada. Results from the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study show that Canadian parents have one of the highest levels of involvement in literacy-related activities with their preschool-age children. "The results ... confirm that Canadian parents are doing an excellent job in fostering a culture of literacy in the home," said Ramona Jennex, Chair of CMEC and Nova Scotia's Minister of Education.

“As New Brunswickers, we have a responsibility to reinforce the culture of literacy and learning in our communities and in our homes,” Education Minister Jody Carr said. “Reading is a cornerstone of education and forms a foundation of success for every child. New immigration program to attract job creators to Canada

Canada will launch a brand new program on April 1 to recruit innovative immigrant entrepreneurs who will create new jobs and spur economic growth, Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney has announced. "Our new Start-Up Visa will help make Canada the destination of choice for the world’s best and brightest to launch their companies," he said.

About the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) is the first of two bulletins that cover the highly anticipated international survey of adult literacy, numeracy and problem-solving skills.

Help inform and shape thinking around policy, practice and research as we prepare for PIAAC. The Institute will examine and compare the learning from IALS and ALL across Canada and other countries, and explore how we can make the most effective use of the soon-to-be released PIAAC results. We will look at the new segments – problem-solving in technology-rich environments and the reading components – and at the implications of changes in levels and cut-off.

UNB business students to benefit from teachings of Margaret Atwood

Canadian writer Margaret Atwood will participate in a new business course being offered this winter at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton. Entitled The Environment, Society and Business, the course will focus on issues of sustainability, and will include writings, films, and speakers from different disciplines including the arts, biology and business.

NALD starts 2013 with revised Vision, Mission and Guiding Principles

The National Adult Literacy Database (NALD) is beginning a new year with an updated Vision, Mission and Values/Guiding Principles. NALD staff, under the direction of CEO Bill Stirling, started the renewal process with the NALD Board of Directors, including the CEO, adding the finishing touches and formalizing the new guidelines and the NALD Value Proposition at a recent board meeting.

Increased employment in private sector bodes well for Canadian economy

Employment rose by 40,000 in December, the fourth increase in five months, according to a new Labour Force Survey from Statistics Canada. December's increase was all in full-time work. The unemployment rate declined 0.1 percentage points to 7.1%, the lowest in four years.
