Toronto, October 13, 2010 – The Canada Council for the Arts today announced the names of the 70 finalists for the 2010 Governor General's Literary Awards. Half of them are finalists for the first time, and they include authors, illustrators and translators from ages 25 to 74.

OTTAWA, Sept. 29 /CNW/ - The Belinda Stronach Foundation today announced it will distribute up to 5,000 laptops to children aged six to twelve in Aboriginal communities across Canada. With support from Vale, BMO Financial Group and the Government of Ontario, the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) Canada program leverages leading-edge technology combined with culturally relevant programming to deliver a unique platform of learning tools to Aboriginal children.

When, in January of the year, I annouced that the federal government had ceased all funding to the Canadian Council on Learning (CCL), I also pledged the Council to two important commitments: to attempt to find some funding to replace monies sourced through the Government of Canada, and to maintain CCL as a viable entry.

Raise-a-Reader, a year-round initiative that raises funds for family literacy programs across Canada, has raised $15-million since its national launch in 2002.
