NALD issues call for nominations for its fourth annual Innovative Technology Award

FREDERICTON, N.B. - The National Adult Literacy Database (NALD) has issued a call for nominations for its fourth annual NALD Innovative Technology Award. NALD established the award in 2010 to bring greater visibility to an exemplary or innovative technology product, project or service that benefits the field of adult literacy and essential skills.

Looking for work? Take a proactive approach by conducting information interviews

Think of the information interview as an exploratory conversation, not a formal interview. During the interview be calm, curious and attentive. Ask the officials about their position and what they are proudest of with respect to their division and the company. Find out what the company needs help with.

Canadians (aged 18 to 54) are concerned that their ability to save for retirement will be impaired both by saving for their children's education (48 per cent) and by taking care of their aging parents (36 per cent), according to the 23rd Annual RBC RRSP Poll.

NALD starts 2013 with revised Vision, Mission and Guiding Principles

The National Adult Literacy Database (NALD) is beginning a new year with an updated Vision, Mission and Values/Guiding Principles. NALD staff, under the direction of CEO Bill Stirling, started the renewal process with the NALD Board of Directors, including the CEO, adding the finishing touches and formalizing the new guidelines and the NALD Value Proposition at a recent board meeting.

Ovations, set for January 17, to celebrate women of Newfoundland and Labrador

The event will begin with an afternoon forum, which will feature keynote speaker Zoe Yujnovich, President and CEO of the Iron Ore Company of Canada. Panelists will include women from across the province who will share their insights and experiences, whether as a chair on a corporate board, as a community volunteer or as a young woman reaching out to her community and humanity around the world.

New year, new job? What are your greatest challenges?

Workers who ring in the new year with a new job may find learning the ropes to be their biggest challenge, a new Accountemps survey suggests. Nearly half of employees and 39 per cent of managers interviewed said mastering new processes and procedures tops their list of concerns when joining a company. Twenty-three per cent from each group cited getting to know a new boss and colleagues as the greatest hurdle.

The Nunavut Literacy Council has launched a pan-northern research project to find out why Inuit women outnumber men in government jobs and in post-secondary school enrolment. The three-year project also aims to discover what can be done to encourage more men to take part in formal education and in the workforce.

Ottawa, corporate Canada partnering to offer job opportunities to veterans

Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, along with representatives from the True Patriot Love Foundation and the Canadian National Railway Company (CN), have announced two new initiatives to further support veterans as they transition to civilian life. The first, the new Veterans Transition Advisory Council, will bring together industry leaders and government with the goal of helping veterans transition into meaningful jobs in the private sector.

State of the L/ES field report from Canadian Literacy and Learning Network

The purpose of the State of the Literacy and Essential Skills Field report is to provide an overview of Literacy and Essential Skills across Canada from the unique perspective of CLLN and its national network partners, the provincial and territorial literacy coalitions. This is the first national environmental scan to be conducted by CLLN and as such it will inform the direction of future scans and will be the basis of further work to show how the Literacy and Essential Skills field is responding to trends.

New life awarded to Lowe's Toolbox for Education Grant Program

Skills/Compétences Canada, a national not-for-profit organization that actively promotes careers in skilled trades, has announced that Lowe's will be renewing its Toolbox for Education Grant Program for 2013. This will be the third year that Lowe's, in partnership with Skills/Compétences Canada, offers the program benefiting students and educators in Ontario and Alberta.
