International Adult Learners’ Week (IALW) received much support from literacy organizations across Canada as was indicated by the number of articles posted to the IALW news releases page on NALD.

To change a culture of defeatism to a school-going culture among at-risk youth borders on the miraculous. Pathways to Education, a non-profit agency, has achieved just this kind of near-miracle in Toronto’s Regent Park, and is being replicated across the country.

Twenty-three educators and five partners will receive awards for using innovative teaching methods to provide students with the tools to be successful in their studies and beyond graduation. The awards support this year’s Education Week theme, Innovative Teaching in the 21st Century.

“Canada’s social and economic future lies in the continued educational growth of its citizens,” said Andrew Parkin, director general of CMEC. “Whether it is learning a new language, improving our literacy, or acquiring the skills needed for a new career, adult learning offers us the chance to grow as individuals and in doing so create positive change in our homes, communities and country.”

“The federal government plays a central role in funding programs that aim to improve quality and accessibility of post-secondary education in Canada,” said Zachary Dayler, national director of CASA. "The federal and provincial governments must work collaboratively toward a sustainable funding model that respects provincial and federal jurisdictions.”

This study kit includes literacy activities that can be used with adult learners during an election period. The focus is on helping learners make informed decisions about the election and, at the same time, develop their vocabulary and their understanding of elections and the democratic process.  

African Nova Scotians looking to return to school to get training for good jobs now have access to a new funding program.

The LEARN program has successfully assisted thousands of adult learners looking to improve their literacy skills. It allows Canadian adults to easily access information about local literacy organizations and help them move forward in finding an appropriate learning program.

The province has signed an agreement with the federal government that provides Nova Scotia with a greater role in helping employers bring temporary foreign workers to the province.

Nova Scotians interested in strengthening Gaelic language and culture can now take a mentoring program through the Office of Gaelic Affairs.
