The ESL Literacy Network invites you to participate in its upcoming online workshop series: Using the ESL Literacy Readers. This two-week online workshop is an opportunity to learn, share ideas and connect with other ESL literacy practitioners.

Help inform and shape thinking around policy, practice and research as The Centre for Literacy prepares for PIAAC. The Summer Institute will examine and compare the learning from IALS and ALL across Canada and other countries, and explore how we can make most effective use of soon-to-be released PIAAC results. We will look at the new segments – problem-solving in technology-rich environments and the reading components – and at the implications of changes in levels and cut-off.

ABC Life Literacy Canada is delighted to announce that the 2013 Life Literacy Awards are now open for submissions to recognize outstanding achievement in adult literacy and essential skills. Areas include community literacy, workplace education, journalism and corporate excellence.

Changes to the provincial immigration program will open doors for more families and skilled workers to immigrate to Nova Scotia. The province has a comprehensive immigration strategy to help attract new skilled labour into the workforce.

Up to 125 civil servants from China will learn about Canada's political system and public policy as part of a new five-year agreement between Executive Education at the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia and the Province of Guangdong.

Canada Post has honoured the efforts of 24 deserving people from across the country with the Aboriginal Education Incentive Awards. The Awards, which were launched in 2004, acknowledge the hard work and drive required to continue education following an absence from formal schooling.

The people of the Northwest Territories inhabit a region characterized by long, cold winters and a wide variety of languages and dialects. Based in Yellowknife, the Northwest Territories Literacy Council is active in promoting and supporting literacy and essential skills in the NWT's 11 official languages, which is "quite a challenge," according to its executive director and a member of NALD's Board of Directors.

Nova Scotians who want to use the Gaelic language can apply for a bursary to study in Scotland. This is the second call for applications for the bursary program, which is administered by Gaelic Affairs and funded by the Scottish government. The deadline for applications is March 8, 2013.

As the trend towards "internationalizing" education in Canada continues, the Study and Go Abroad Fair, recognized as Canada's largest international university and student travel expo, features a myriad of post-secondary studies from Certificate programs to Bachelor's, Master's and Doctorate degrees, as well as gap year and other student travel opportunities. The student expo will take place in Montreal on March 2, Toronto March 3, and Vancouver March 5.

This series will feature experts discussing the community impact of family literacy development, the latest research in the field of family literacy, and cultural competency.
