This event combines a taste of the Scotiabank Giller Prize Gala formalities with a unique urban twist. Guests watch the live broadcast of the Scotiabank Giller Gala on a big screen, mingle with fellow guests, vote on the book they think will take home the coveted Scotiabank Giller Prize and enjoy appetizers and cocktails.

Veterans Affairs Canada has put together a package of learning resources to help teachers and students observe Veterans' Week and Remembrance Day on November 11, 2011. One of the activities is Postcards for Peace which provides an opportunity for youth to send postcards to those who served Canada in times of war, military conflict and peace or to still-serving Canadian Forces members. This learning activity allows youth to actively remember the sacrifices and achievements of Canadian veterans.

"While tablet users may be more oriented towards news anyway, there's something about the tablet that's causing them to do what they're inclined to do even more and in new ways," says Tom Rosenstiel, director of the project and a lead author of the study.

Dorothy MacKeracher, dean of education at Yorkville, says the program is designed to offer flexibility for adult educators to continue working as they complete their degree. "The online delivery of courses uses modern teaching methods to deliver a robust and thorough curriculum that is at par with in-class delivery."

The OECD Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) will support countries in their efforts to design and implement policies which foster both the development of skills and the optimal use of existing skills.

"It's like weaving the basket. Aboriginal education needs to be woven right into the system. We believe everyone should learn and understand that we are an integral part of Canadian history."

"The yardstick is always moving. The more technologically advanced we get, the further behind some people fall because they not only are lacking the basic literacy but they are lacking digital literacy. The gap is increasing."

On October 12, National Students' Day, students took the opportunity to call on all levels of government in Canada to make post-secondary education accessible to everyone, regardless of their economic circumstances.

The president and chief executive officer of CLLN will lead in consolidating, enhancing and promoting the strengths of the organization in addition to its network, the provincial and territorial coalitions and its partners. Applications must be submitted by October 24, 2011.

Researchers studied the rising habits of 253 college students. The students completed cognitive tasks, a one-week retrospective sleep diary, and questionnaires about sleep, class schedules, alcohol consumption and mood.

"It is very positive to see the re-introduction of copyright legislation, as this remains a key concern for the library community," says CLA President Karen Adams. "We are happy to see that improvements introduced in the last bill have been maintained; however, modifications are required if the legislation is to ultimately succeed in its objectives, those being both balanced and technologically neutral."

These new interactive learning tools will be a welcome resource for practitioners and program administrators who are often faced with the task of determining how to remove barriers that impede successful learning outcomes. The tools are a project of George Brown College's School of Work and College Preparation, Centre for Preparatory and Liberal Studies, in partnership with Spiral Community Resource Group.

The unveiling of a new award promoting literacy innovation was among the highlights of Life Literacy Night, ABC Life Literacy Canada’s annual awards ceremony, held at Toronto’s Gardiner Museum recently.

Since Raise-A-Reader was launched nationally in 2002, the fundraising and awareness initiative has raised more than $17 million for literacy programs. On September 28, 27 Postmedia newspapers participated from coast-to-coast to raise money for programs in their own communities.

Young brains soak up the information around them like tiny, too-cute sponges. That's the reason, put simply, why it is important to get children interested in reading in the early years of life.
