A TESL Canada reminder about its 2012 conference

TESL Canada invites you to submit a proposal to present at the TESL Canada 2012 conference October 11-13, 2012.  The conference will be held at Thompson Rivers University, Kamloops, British Columbia. The theme for the conference, TESL Interiors: Landscapes of Literacies and Language, is one reflective of the multiple dimensions of communication and language education.  Presentations can cover any of the diverse areas of inquiry related to TEAL and Teacher Education.

Canadian students make the grade in math according to new CMEC report

A major new report released by the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC), indicates that over 90 per cent of Canadian students in Grade 8 are achieving at or above their expected level of performance in mathematics. Almost half are achieving above their expected level.

CMEC releases report to Canadians on official languages in education

The report was compiled jointly by provinces and territories through CMEC with financial assistance from the Government of Canada. It describes the wide variety of programs, initiatives and projects in minority-language education and second-language instruction that were carried out in provinces and territories between 2005 and 2009.

Canada Reads panelists, books for 2012 named - Focus to be on non-fiction

CBC has revealed the line-up for Canada Reads: True Stories, the first time the popular nationwide literary debate has chosen non-fiction books. The winner will be chosen at the end of four hour-long debates, taking place February 6 to 9, 2012, in Toronto.

Manitoba is prospering but education numbers are weak: MB Check-Up 2011

The MB Check-Up shows that between 2005 and 2010, Manitoba had the highest percentage of youth who did not graduate from high school compared to the other western provinces, Ontario, and Canada. In 2010, this percentage rose by 0.9 percentage points to 11.6 per cent.

“Although the economic downturn may have contributed to lower learning and development budgets in 2010, the decline in spending is indicative of an ongoing pattern,” said Carrie Lavis, senior research associate with The Conference Board of Canada.

Veterans Affairs Canada has put together a package of learning resources to help teachers and students observe Veterans' Week and Remembrance Day on November 11, 2011. One of the activities is Postcards for Peace which provides an opportunity for youth to send postcards to those who served Canada in times of war, military conflict and peace or to still-serving Canadian Forces members. This learning activity allows youth to actively remember the sacrifices and achievements of Canadian veterans.

Students are outlining their recommendations in an updated policy paper for the Canadian Federation of Students' lobby week. The main recommendation of the paper is the adoption of a post-secondary education act that sets out a national vision for higher education.

Education emerged as an issue of vital importance to the future of the North at Canada’s North Beyond 2011 conference, organized by The Conference Board of Canada. Paul Martin, former prime minister, said that the education of Aboriginal youth is more than an economic issue – it is the single most important moral issue that Canada faces as a country.
