Bow Valley College seeking adult education practitioners to serve on advisory committee for new project

The Centre for Excellence in Foundational Learning at Bow Valley College is looking for experienced adult education practitioners to serve on an advisory committee for an innovative adult writing assessment project titled Write Forward. Members will assist in reviews of project design and development through all stages, and assist with networking and promotion of the project across Canada.

Workplace morale is high for most employees, according to new survey

The mood around the office water cooler is generally positive, new research suggests. In an Accountemps survey, more than half (54 per cent) of workers described the morale at their companies as somewhat good. Twenty-eight per cent of people said workplace morale is very good.

Manitoba invests in programs that link students to careers in trades

Manitoba will build on its success in increasing apprenticeship and trades opportunities for more Manitobans and grow Manitoba’s skilled workforce through a new program called Skill Build. The program will upgrade and equip more industrial arts classrooms in rural Manitoba for apprenticeship training.

FIRST program helps fill skills gap in northern B.C.

An extension of an agreement between the B.C. government and the Central Interior Logging Association (CILA) will allow 30 more students to train as log and chip truck drivers or heavy-equipment operators under the Forest Industry Readiness Skills Training (FIRST) program and place them in permanent positions within the sector.

"The funding ... is putting new equipment in our local campuses, giving our students access to the latest technology," said Blair Lekstrom, MLA for Peace River South. "This new equipment ensures students get the best technical training at our institutions, part of a broader Skills and Training Plan that's focused on steps we can take to effectively meet the growing demand for skilled workers."

Are cuts to Aboriginal organizations hurting crucial research projects?

Over 100 eminent academics have signed a letter to Aboriginal and Northern Affairs Minister John Duncan demanding that core funding for Aboriginal organizations be restored to protect vital research projects underway. The signatories highlight that researchers partner with tribal councils, the National Aboriginal Health Organization, and other Aboriginal representative organizations to address "health, education and infrastructure issues that are preventing Canadian First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities from reaching their full potential."

Women in university research face gender equity challenges: report

A newly released report by the Council of Canadian Academies, entitled 'Strengthening Canada's Research Capacity: The Gender Dimension,' provides an assessment of the the factors that influence university research careers of women. This assessment was requested by the Minister of Industry in the fall of 2010 after the notable absence of female candidates for the prestigious Canada Excellence Research Chairs program.

Most Ontarians failing financial literacy test, new study shows

Out of 1,000 people surveyed for a new study from the Investor Education Fund (IEF), only 36 per cent scored a passing grade of more than 60 per cent when it came to testing their knowledge on topics such as financial fraud, RRSPs, mortgages and investing.

Millennials often struggle with how to handle confrontation at work

Besides entering the workforce with unrealistic confidence and expectations, young people also can have problems resolving disputes. A focus group report indicates the subjects said they prefer to text someone they're having a problem with rather than speak by phone or face to face.

The Welsh Baccalaureate qualification, known as the Welsh Bacc, teaches a core of subjects such as math and languages and gives students the chance for work experience. Rebecca Williams, policy officer at Wales' teaching union UCAC, described the Welsh Bacc as a positive, saying it "combines the academic subjects with more real world type skills."

Women received more pay raises in 2012 but men got more $$$ - TribeHR study

When analyzing the size of pay raises, the TribeHR Pay Raise Index found that men were three times more likely to earn a salary increase in excess of 25 percent. Looking at pay raises of 5 percent or more, 60 percent went to men and just 38 percent to women.

The final two lectures will be headed by author and editor Alvin Finkel, professor of Canadian history at Athabasca University, and will feature contributors to Working People in Alberta: A History, a new book published by Athabasca University Press.
