National Adult Literacy Database

As young children head off to school for the first time meeting new friends in their pre-school and kindergarten classes, ABC Life Literacy Canada is delighted to be working with Energizer Canada in the promotion of their new program, The Power of Reading, launched during Life Literacy Month, September 2011.

The National Adult Literacy Database (NALD) has integrated the content of its former NALD@Work website into the main NALD site. Users now have the option of viewing all content or choosing to view only literacy information or essential skills content.

A Social and Holistic Approach to Numeracy is a new website which was developed as part of a two-year project led by the Labour Education Centre in partnership with the Canadian Union of Public Employees and Workplace Education Manitoba.

The Centre for Family Literacy in Edmonton has been working with Vancouver Community College (VCC) and Conestoga College (Ontario) to establish an online college certificate program in family literacy. After being piloted at VCC, this OLES-funded project is now complete and information about the program is being disseminated across Canada.

The Canadian Plastics Sector Council (CPSC) announces the official launch of their Essential Skills website and assessment tool. All tools and assessments on the website are available in both French and English.

The National Adult Literacy Database (NALD) Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of its new CEO.

Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax will host a series of speakers, workshops and public events this fall and next winter that will examine the question: “How do we read the world?" Titled ‘Literacy as Ways of Knowing,’ the series will explore the many ways literacy is interpreted, how it is defined, what it looks and sounds like, and how various forms and mediums of literacy affect our lives.

Canada Post has announced the finalists for its 2011 Community Literacy Awards. In two categories, Individual Achievement and Educator, finalists were chosen by a committee of judges from Canada Post from entries submitted from across the country. Literacy advocates from organizations across Canada will determine the ultimate winners.

The bursaries are for adults who did not finish Grade 12 in the public school system and who are currently enrolled in, or planning to attend, an adult upgrading program. The scholarships are for adults who have completed their Grade 12 through an adult learning program, and are going on to, or continuing in college, university, or a trades and technology program.

Microsoft Live@edu provides the flexibility of Office Web Apps that include web-optimized versions of Word, Excel, OneNote and PowerPoint. UNB students will now be able to access these essential tools anywhere, anytime, on their PCs or mobile devices.

Canadians across the country have a new opportunity to recognize the exceptional contributions volunteers make in their communities. Nominations for the Prime Minister’s Volunteer Awards will be accepted until September 9, 2011.

Volunteers in the John Howard Society’s literacy program provide one-on-one tutoring to inmates at the Winnipeg Remand Centre. The program aims not only to improve inmates’ reading, writing and grammar skills but also to help educate them on topics of interest including parenting, victim awareness and substance use.
