Generations coming together through technology

Technology will play a critical role in keeping students connected with their parents while they're at school this year. A new report shows that in nearly equal numbers, connected young Canadians (ages 18-24) and their connected parents (40 per cent and 43 per cent, respectively) are using technology to stay close.

Update on Adult Literacy Strategy for New Brunswick Action Plan (PDF)

In December 2009, the N.B. Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour published Working Together for Adult Literacy: An Adult Literacy Strategy for New Brunswick. Subsequent to the release of the strategy, an action plan was developed. This document reports on the achievements, progress and challenges experienced within the strategic priorities during the first phase of the plan.

It's been summer of literacy and learning on PEI

This summer 23 tutors are tutoring 700 students in one-on-one session across the Island from Tignish to Souris. They are working mostly in libraries, but some tutors are in schools and community centres, says the PEI Literacy Alliance, host of the Summer Tutoring Program for Kids.

The theme of International Literacy Day 2012 is Literacy and Peace. This theme was adopted by the United Nations Literacy Decade (UNLD) to demonstrate the multiple uses and value that literacy brings to people.

From May 23 to July 20, more than 3,500 young Canadians between the ages of 16 and 22 voluntarily pursued the opportunity to learn lifelong lessons in financial literacy via an online national contest. Each applicant was required to submit a 250-word essay summarizing insights gained from a custom financial profile generated by taking a quiz.

Decoda’s funding will support innovative solutions that use literacy as a strategy to address cross-sector challenges in B.C. communities. All literacy solutions will be considered for this award, but increased attention will be provided to entries that address the broad definition of literacy. This includes computer use, continuous learning, numeracy, oral communication, reading, thinking skills, working with others, and writing.

Frontier College is currently seeking a Program Assistant (1 year contract) to assist the Computer Training Coordinator with implementing the Virtual Learning Portal project. This portal is an online web‐based learning management system. The goal of the project is to provide an accessible literacy and learning program for all Canadians regardless of their geographical location.

The Centre for Literacy invites nominations for two (2) board members for terms beginning in September 2012. The two members will be drawn from the Montreal-Ottawa region. Travel and accommodations will be covered for three or four face-to-face meetings per year for the first year. Other meetings and interactions will take place through distance technologies.

A journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step

When asked to describe the learning initiatives she has been involved with since moving back to Vancouver, Pat emphasizes that she first had to deal with her housing and health issues, otherwise she couldn’t have done any of the learning she has done. Following this, seeing her daughter receive a degree from SFU was a huge motivator for her.

By the end of the month, more than 2,300 Aboriginal youth will have improved their literacy skills while enjoying the fun of summer camp at 28 locations in Ontario. As part of the Lieutenant-Governor's Summer Literacy Camp program, these camps are managed by Frontier College.

The Edmonton Literacy Coalition, which was formed a year ago by different organizations that advocate literacy, aims to erase the stigma surrounding adults who struggle with reading. The campaign illustrates how low literacy levels can affect everyday life.

The “Whole Life” project was a two-year professional development and training project to support adult literacy educators to address learning disabilities (LD) in their practice settings. A number of tools were produced by the various partners in the project in order to meet this goal.

Ontario recognizes work of leader in literacy education

Premier Dalton McGuinty honoured the Barrie-based organization for its continued support and training to more than 100 community-based literacy agencies across the province. Community Literacy of Ontario is well-known for its leadership in online training including Literacy Basics, a self-directed online toolkit for literacy educators.

UNESCO names Port Harcourt, Nigeria, World Book Capital for 2014

The city of Port Harcourt was chosen “on account of the quality of its program, in particular its focus on youth and the impact it will have on improving Nigeria’s culture of books, reading, writing and publishing to improve literacy rates,” according to the Selection Committee. Montreal was the city of choice for 2005.
