ABC Life Literacy Canada is pleased to announce that Lesra Martin, Kamloops, B.C., resident, lawyer and motivational speaker, has joined the organization as the first-ever LEARN ambassador.

“The federal government plays a central role in funding programs that aim to improve quality and accessibility of post-secondary education in Canada,” said Zachary Dayler, national director of CASA. "The federal and provincial governments must work collaboratively toward a sustainable funding model that respects provincial and federal jurisdictions.”

In this inaugural issue of ‘Insights,’ OLES focuses on employer perceptions of workplace literacy and essential skills training.

Canada Post has announced that nominations for the 2011 Canada Post Community Literacy Awards are being accepted until June 3, 2011. Nominations can be made in two categories: Individual Achievement and Educator.

Through the learner area of its website, CLLN strives to strengthen the voice of learners across Canada. Complete with an audio component, the learner area features learner profiles, an interactive election feature and tips for writing letters.

This study kit includes literacy activities that can be used with adult learners during an election period. The focus is on helping learners make informed decisions about the election and, at the same time, develop their vocabulary and their understanding of elections and the democratic process.  

In celebration of International Adult Learners’ Week happening across Canada April 2-9, ABC Life Literacy Canada will travel to Edmonton March 30-April 1 as part of a media and PR Tour.

The 2011 Census Adult Education Kit provides an excellent introduction to the census. It explains what a census is, how the 2011 Census will work, and why the census is important. Adult students will learn how their personal information is protected, and how to seek help if they have difficulty answering the questions.

International Adult Learners’ Week (IALW), an initiative that celebrates adult learners and the joy of lifelong learning, will be observed in Canada from April 2 to 9, 2011.

OLC’s Spotlight on Learning:  Becoming Agents of Change conference was held in October 2010 in Toronto. This new website is designed not only to highlight the conference, but also to feed the momentum and energy in the field with continued learning, news updates, and stories of change that have been inspired by learning. Full of workshop videos, resources, downloads and much more, this website encourages a continuum of learning.

This is a teaching and learning package designed to help adult learners increase their literacy and essential skills in order to make easier transitions to a new workforce or adapt to changing technology on the job.

This year, one inductee from each region in the territory and a Minister’s Choice Award will be awarded, for a total of seven inductees.

The Canadian Council on Learning (CCL) has launched a new online tool that allows users to measure the state of two crucial components of financial literacy – numeracy and document literacy – in more than 52,000 neighbourhoods and communities across the country.
