CHICAGO – Speaking to a full house of educators at the opening general session of the International Reading Association’s 55th Annual Convention in Chicago, Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan said teaching was her favourite profession and the “most noble profession.”
The queen spoke simply and with heartfelt eloquence about what literacy means and the important role teachers have in moulding life.

The Saskatchewan Aboriginal Literacy Network (SALN) will host the fourth Aboriginal Literacy Gathering, a meeting of learners, practitioners and leaders in Aboriginal literacy, May 25-27 in Manitou Beach.
Titled Literacy: An Aboriginal Cultural Tradition, the Gathering will feature well-known author Richard Van Camp as the keynote speaker and Robert Doucette, president of Métis Nation - Saskatchewan, as the closing speaker.

The deadline for nominations for the Saskatchewan Aboriginal Literacy Awards has been extended to Friday, April 30 at 5 p.m. These awards honour and recognize individual and organizational effort in the development, enhancement, and/or promotion of Aboriginal literacy in Saskatchewan. Recipients will be recognized in each of the following categories: Elder, Practitioner, Learner, and Organization/Business. Nominations are accepted, accompanied by two letters of support.
