Top 20 Downloads from the NALD Library collection - April 2012 to March 2013

Here are the user statistics for 2012-2013 from our 'Top 20 Downloads.' The report examines the number of PDF documents, in both English and French, which are viewed and downloaded by visitors to the websites NALD and BDAA. We are able to look at the most downloaded documents in terms of titles and numbers for the 2012-2013 fiscal year.

Original co-founders to host PLAIN 2013 Conference after 20 years

In seven weeks, plain language advocates from around the globe will meet in Vancouver, B.C., at the Plain Language Association International (PLAIN) 20th anniversary Conference. Government, business, education, literacy, legal and finance sectors will be represented. Speakers from 15 countries will address issues such as user-testing, plain language project management, technology, mobile communications, globalization and the future of plain language.

While labour market pressures eased somewhat in the second quarter, 290,000 full- and part-time private sector jobs still went unfilled for four months or more, according to data compiled by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. The results of the quarterly Help Wanted report are based on responses from 3,526 small business owners, who were surveyed on unfilled jobs in their firms owing to the shortage of qualified labour.

Decoda Literacy Conference coming up November 21-22, 2013

The provincial literacy conference in British Columbia will explore five streams of literacy: Adult, Family, Community, Workplace and Emerging. Canadian employees can expect an average salary increase of 2.6% in 2014, according to a national survey of public and private sector employers conducted by Hay Group. The projected increase is lower than the projection for 2013 (at 2.9 %) and continues to be relatively close to projected increases of 2.8% for American employees. U.S. average projections are also lower for 2014 than they were a year ago.

Many executives uncomfortable being 'friended' by business contacts: survey

Most senior managers surveyed by OfficeTeam said they are uncomfortable being 'friended' by their bosses (71 per cent) or the employees they supervise (66 per cent), compared to 69 per cent and 72 per cent of respondents, respectively, in a similar survey conducted in 2009.

Canada welcomes first immigrants under new Federal Skilled Trades Program

Canada's Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander has officially welcomed one of the first permanent residents under the new Federal Skilled Trades Program: Eric Byrne, originally from Ireland. Employment and Social Development Minister Jason Kenney has also welcomed another successful applicant of the program: Paul Lyttle, a new permanent resident of Canada.

Jason Kenney, Minister of Employment and Social Development, has announced reforms to strengthen and improve the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP). As announced in Economic Action Plan 2013, the Government of Canada has now implemented a user fee for employers applying for labour market opinions along with new language and advertising requirements for the TFWP.

Post-secondary education students confident in financial knowledge: RBC Poll

The majority of post-secondary students (64 per cent) plan to live away from home while attending school this fall, despite expecting the cost to be about 50 per cent higher than those living at home, according to the 2013 RBC Student Finances Poll. Of those students living away, more than eight-in-10 (83 per cent) are confident in their ability to manage their finances.

Disappointing job numbers for the month of July: Statistics Canada

Led by declines among youth, employment decreased by 39,000 in July, and the unemployment rate rose 0.1 percentage points to 7.2%. With this decrease, employment gains have averaged 11,000 per month over the past six months, slower than the average of 27,000 observed during the preceding six-month period.
