SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS

PEI Volunteers for Literacy use a broad definition of literacy when we come into the schools to read. We help students understand the past and help them move into the future. By working in schools, we show our commitment and belief that “it takes a village to raise a reader”. PEI Volunteers for Literacy and teachers work in partnership, deciding together which activities the volunteer feels competent doing and where the students need help. Schedules for the activities are arranged cooperatively, since the PEI Volunteers for Literacy program is flexible and fits into any school.

PEI Volunteers for Literacy visit the school at least once a week, and are a very special part of the education team at the school. Sometimes we are invited to attend special events or join the students on a class outing.

PEI Volunteers for Literacy are caring, wise and useful elders, not only in the school setting, but in the community as a whole. By sharing our love of reading and showing an enthusiasm for life, we act as role models for children, and inspire them to enjoy both the written and the spoken word.
