History
The Port
Hawkesbury Literacy Council became incorporated in February
of 1999.
Since
the 1970's, literacy programs have been delivered in Port
Hawkesbury through partnerships with the Town of Port Hawkesbury
Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department and local and regional
school boards.
In 1997-98,
a Literacy Needs Assessment was carried out. Funded by the
National Literacy Secretariat, the assessment suggested the
formation of a committee to address the literacy needs of
the community.
As a
result, in 1998 the Port Hawkesbury Literacy Council was
established.
This Council is a member of the Inverness County Literacy
Network, and as such, delivers the Nova Scotia Community
Learning
Initiatives
programs to adult learners in the area.
