Projects for 2001 - 2003

  4. Literacy Connections, funded by Human Resources Development Canada, is a family project consisting of two parts, Homework Connection and Books for Life. Homework Connection is a project where adults and school age children will work together on homework. This will enhance the skills of the adults so that they can better help their children with their homework. Books for Life is a reading program for families with pre-school children (birth - 5) that will promote reading as a valued family experience. Parents will benefit from enhancing their ability to support their children's language and literacy development.

  5. Computer Access, funded by a Peter Gzowski Invitational grant administered through the Nova Scotia Provincial Literacy Coalition, the Port Hawkesbury Literacy Council was able to purchase a new computer with a scanner and a colored printer. This computer is available to adult learners who are registered in our program. A second computer will be purchased with the help of VolNet, the Voluntary Sector Network Support Program. VolNet is a federal government program administered by Industry Canada to improve access to information technology.

Projects for 1999 - 2000

  1. Projects Options, a Literacy Corp proposal funded by the National Literacy Secretariat, will take appropriate steps to increase public awareness of literacy options available to youth between ages 16 and 24.

This year-long projects will target youth in locations of high density including dances, youth centers, hockey arenas, sports fields, and beaches to access the target group and distribute information. In addition, information sessions will be offered in a workshop format.

  2. Project Read, funded by the National Literacy Secretariat, will create a 3-step model designed to access adult learners, integrate family literacy components into the structure of the existing CLI classes, and document the model for distribution and use by CLI networks throughout the province.

  3. Seniors Helping Seniors, funded by the Eastern Regional Health Board through the Community Health Promotion Fund, is a project that will design and implement a peer tutoring program designed for seniors.

Although a 10-week project, the Port Hawkesbury Literacy Council will continue the program once it has been implemented. It is hoped that this project will involve seniors in our community who, in the past, have not had the opportunity or interest to become involved in adult upgrading, either as a learner or as a tutor.

  4. ESL Workshop, funded by the PGI Spare fund, was held on Feb. 12 at SAERC in Port Hawkesbury. Facilitators were Gerri Mills and Kathy Burnett of the Halifax Immigrant Learning Center.

Designed for literacy practitioners, the 1-day workshop provided tips and techniques for teaching English as a Second Language.

  5. Project D-3, funded by PGI, is the development, design and distribution of family literacy brochures. A set of user friendly brochures was designed and distributed to members of the community.
