The Richmond County
Literacy Network is a volunteer, community-based, non-profit society
established in April, 1998 to address the adult literacy needs of the
residents of Richmond County. As a registered organization, the
Literacy Network
works in partnership with numerous government agencies and community
organizations to accomplish its vision.
Our vision is that "all people in Richmond County
will have access to opportunities for lifelong learning. Given
these opportunities, they will be able to acquire the knowledge and
skills necessary for them to achieve a personally satisfying life and
realize their full potential as productive and prosperous citizens in an
information-based, global society."
Our Literacy Network, as indicated by the mission
statement, is concerned with promoting and supporting lifelong learning,
in the County of Richmond, by providing effective program and service
delivery through the maximization of existing resources, collaborative
partnerships and advocacy. Therefore, the
main activities
of the Literacy Network are adult learning programs, one-on-one
tutoring, life/work skills workshops, youth initiatives and the
promotion and support of literacy and lifelong learning.
The Literacy Network
currently has a board of 12 directors and a general membership of 48.
Meetings are held monthly and are open to the general membership. All
meetings are well attended and support is strong for the literacy
initiatives undertaken by the Network.
