Coming in January, 2005

An Introduction to Research in Practice in Adult Literacy

The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto will be offering this online course January to April, 2005.

As well as learning about research in practice initiatives in Canada and elsewhere, participants will critically read and discuss research articles, relate research findings to practice, and prepare to do a research in practice project. While addressed to adult literacy educators, the course may be of interest to others who want to use research to improve practice. It is important that participants are working or have recently worked in an adult literacy, adult education or related setting.

Coming to Saskatoon in February, 2005

In the fall of 2003, the Saskatchewan Literacy Network (SLN) started to explore the possibilities for research in practice. We consulted practitioners, spoke with counterparts from other provinces and territories and explored the literature about research in practice. The information that we gathered was compiled in a report titled Exploring the Possibilities for Literacy Research in Practice in Saskatchewan 2003-2004. The report can be accessed electronically on NALD. Hard copies are also available from the SLN. To order a copy, call 1-888-511-2111 or email saskliteracy@sasktel.net.

Based on the results of the work in 2003-2004, the SLN decided to continue to support practitioners interested in research in practice. A small portion of funds were received from the National Literacy Secretariat to offer a two-day research in practice workshop for literacy practitioners in Saskatchewan. Mary Norton will facilitate this workshop in Saskatoon on February 24 & 25, 2005.
