Profile: Saskatchewan Literacy Coalition
Since its founding in 1986, the SLC has brought together literacy practitioners in Saskatoon to promote literacy in a cooperative spirit. The leadership it has produced in the advancement of literacy, the positive impact it has made on literacy delivery, and the spirit of community it has fostered are worthy of celebration and recognition.
The SLC has worked diligently to raise public awareness about literacy. Over the years the SLC has published literacy supplements in the Star Phoenix to inform the public about literacy issues, programs, and success stories in Saskatoon. SLC members participate in the annual StarPhoenix Raise-A-Reader fundraising; in 2007 more than $6,000 was raised for Family Literacy programming in the city with the help of the SLC.
One of the SLC’s most impressive achievements is its promotion of International Literacy Day Celebrations on the SIAST Kelsey campus. In 2007, a cake and free books were just part of the fun. “Literacy...Strengthening Lives, Building Community” was the theme for the celebration that saw well over 8000 participants take part in a “drop everything and read event.”
Much of the SLC’s effective work happens in a less public forum. At its monthly meetings its members come together to exchange information about programs. The SLC fosters partnerships between programs, as well as encouragement and mentorship to groups initiating literacy projects. When programs know what others are doing and individuals are working together in a spirit of cooperation, everyone benefits in terms of sharing ideas and being able to refer learners to programs that best suits their needs.
The SLC’s mandate for public awareness, for information sharing, and for opportunities for collaboration foster the cause of literacy and ensure excellence in literacy programming. These activities speak to the commitment and passion of the members of the SLC.
