Story of the Week: April 3, 2006 - Table of Contents

The Adult Learning Association of Cape Breton County is a community literacy network that serves all of Cape Breton County. ALACBC (Adult Learning Association of Cape Breton County) classes promote lifelong learning opportunities for adults. Classes are open to all adults, 19 years of age and over who have been out of school for at least 1 year, who wish to improve their reading, writing, math and technology skills. ALACBC use the Standards for Community Based Adult Literacy Programs which have been developed by the Nova Scotia Department of Education.

The Sydney Day Class is a full time level 1 and 2 Adult Learning Program that meets at the Southend Centre. There are a maximum of 10 students in the class and it is learner centered. The writings here are a result of a discussion and brainstorm by the learners in the class. Several of these stories were presented at an ALACBC meeting by one of our learners and were also presented at a Health Literacy Initiative meeting in Halifax in January by the learners showcased here.
