The following story was written by Jeffrey, from the Halifax area in Nova Scotia. Jeffrey is a student in the Bloomfield Literacy Program.

Success Starts Here

by Jeffrey LeBlanc

Success really does start here for me because I started a program with the Halifax Community Learning Network. I only went to grade 7 in school, and I always had a hard time, so I left to go work at the Halifax Shipyards. I had a good job for a long time, so I didn't have to worry about reading or math. Then one day I hurt my back and I couldn't work anymore. That was six years ago and I spent a long time being angry that I couldn't work and couldn't get compensation. Then I decided I had to make some changes and get my GED. I really like working with a tutor and now we are reading a book together. It is the first book I have read since I left school.
