Story of the Week

February 27, 2012

The following story was written by Hayam Abdel Moniem, from Kingston, Ontario. Hayam is enrolled in LINC classes – Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada with Kingston Literacy & Skills (KL & S).

First Capital Day

by Hayam Abdel Moniem

June 15th, was First Capital Day in Kingston, so LINC preferred to spend and to share that day at Confederation Park where Kingston celebrates that occasion every year.

There I saw different exhibitions from the past. I was fortunate to see what the people were wearing at that time. My daughter tried on a dress and the lady who dressed my daughter explained to me when and where the girls used to wear that dress. My daughter was lucky because the journalist took a picture of her and it would be in the newspaper.

Also I had the opportunity to see some women sewing with an old style machine. On the other side there was a singer singing and dancing with his traditional clothing. He was amazing and all the people were singing with him. Then we headed to take the wagon ride to have a short tour. During that tour our teachers explained and gave us some information about what we could see. When we finished our tour I went home. Finally, I want to say thanks so much to our teachers about their efforts to help us realize and get a lot of information about all the events that happen out of the class through the trips.
