This true story was written by Melvin Stone, from Corner Brook, Newfoundland. He wrote his story at the end of 1999, as part of a New Year's Resolutions project in his literacy class at the Learning Centre in Corner Brook.

I grew up in Labrador and did not have a chance to go to school. I worked with my father in the fishery. I have learned to read and write in this program. I hope to continue this program in the year 2000.
