Story of the Week

April 26, 2004

This week, we have a story written by Irene Reykdal, from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Irene is enrolled in literacy classes at UFCW Local 832 Training Centre in Winnipeg.

Afraid to Take a Promotion

by Irene Reykdal

This is a story that happened to me. One time my workplace was looking for a new manager for one of our sections. Many people told me to apply for the opening because I do most of the work already. I just had to do a little more paperwork. But just the little more paperwork on the computer was my biggest problem. So I never applied for the job. I told most of them that I wasn't interested in this but the truth was, I was afraid of the writing part and that people might laugh at my mistakes. How could I be this old and not be able to write without making so many mistakes!

Well maybe one day I will have more courage and take a promotion.

[This story was taken from a collection of stories written by literacy students, p.12, at the UFCW Local 832 Training Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The book is entitled Writing Our Voices.]
