Story of the Week

The following story was written by Travis Gendron, from Midland, Ontario. Travis is attending Midland Reading Centre, coordinated by the Midland Area Reading Council (MARC) and has a tutor on Wednesday nights at the library for reading and writing. This is the first story he ever wrote.

Hi I'm Travis a widower of four kids. After fourteen years of marriage I have to learn to read and write. Even how to use a telephone because I would always get the wrong number or you got a recording and paying bills. At the bank paying my bills was difficult because they didn't know who I was. I had to show ID for who I was. They gave me a green card that the bank machine ate three times on me. Happy to say I can use my card without it eating it.
It is very difficult to ask your kids how to spell words when you know you should be helping them in their education. They under stand how important their education is to them because of my situation. Hopefully I will be able to read and write to my grandkids and help them some day.
What I don't under stand is how kids can go from grade one to grade ten or twelve with out reading or writing. They usually end up quitting before they finish school. The system has to change so that ever person who comes out of grade eight is up to standard not just passing them without them being unable to read or write.
