Story of the Week

July 16, 2012

This week, we have a story by Ranjit Malhi, from Victoria, BC. Ranjit has worked as a housekeeper at the Inn at Laurel Point in Victoria for four years, and she does her job with care and pride, but when a guest would leave her a note, Ranjit was unable to read it. As an immigrant from India, she never had the opportunity to learn to read English properly. Recently, though, that has changed: she was able to read and understand a guest’s written request for the first time. The hotel was one of the first companies in Greater Victoria to partner with the READ Society to explore workplace learning opportunities, and they have been working together for a couple of years now.

Story

by Ranjit Malhi

I like learning to read. At home, my youngest son is helping me.

Note:

According to Helen Thomas, an adult educator at the READ Society, “Ranjit is really eager to learn. She’s always willing to write sentences using her spelling words and loves to read new stories.”
