February 24 and March 3, 2003

This week, we are launching seven stories written by students from NorQuest College in Edmonton, Alberta. You can read some of the stories as well as hear them.
NorQuest College has approximately 10,000 students enrolled in upgrading, ESL and skills training programs. The main campus is in downtown Edmonton and the ESL campus is in the West End of the city. There are satellite sites around northern Alberta. We are very proud of the extra learning support we are able to give to students with learning disabilities and physical challenges. NorQuest won the City of Edmonton Mayor's Award for Accessible Architecture, 2001. Several of the students whose stories you will see receive support from Learning Support Services at NorQuest.
Cindy grew up in Edmonton and moved to Saskatchewan when she was nine years old. She returned to Edmonton in 2002 to further her education at NorQuest College. Cindy has successfully completed Adult Basic Education and is now working to improve reading and writing so that she can begin high school level classes. Her goal is to become an early childhood development worker or maybe study accounting. She is single and is dating a very special man.
My favorite spot I love the most is where my grandparents live. Where I grew up, there is a big river just down the hill from their yard. I love going down to the riverbank and sitting on the edge of the dock and putting my feet in the water. It's so cold at first but I get used to the water. I sit there and think about all sorts of stuff like the future, about how when my sisters and I were growing up we would go swimming, skating, sliding, even go skidooing. It is so beautiful and peaceful out there. You can hear nothing but the water running, the birds singing, and the wind blowing through the forest. I love going out there once in awhile to get a break from the city.
