Story of the Week

February 24 and March 3, 2003

This week, we are launching seven stories written by students from NorQuest College in Edmonton, Alberta. You can read some of the stories as well as hear them.

NorQuest College has approximately 10,000 students enrolled in upgrading, ESL and skills training programs. The main campus is in downtown Edmonton and the ESL campus is in the West End of the city. There are satellite sites around northern Alberta. We are very proud of the extra learning support we are able to give to students with learning disabilities and physical challenges. NorQuest won the City of Edmonton Mayor's Award for Accessible Architecture, 2001. Several of the students whose stories you will see receive support from Learning Support Services at NorQuest.

This is a story by Saniji Hajdari. She is in the level 2 Adult Basic Education class working to improve reading and writing in English. She is originally from Kosovo and worked as a nurse there. She would like to be a nurse in Canada too. She is single and loves reading. In her home in Kosovo, she read many books and especially liked to read biographies.

The Best Thing About Canada

by Sanije Hajdari

The best thing about Canada is freedom. Freedom is very important to people especially people who have had experience in war. I am one of them, so for me it is very important to live here where you can do whatever you want. For example, if you want to work, you can work, or if you want to go to school, you can go. If you want to go to school, the government may even help you. People here can do whatever they want. They can also eat whatever they want. However, this freedom which we have, many countries do not have, so we should always pray for them and for the freedom which we have in Canada. I hope all the countries in the world will have this freedom someday.
