Mom and Ralph
Happy memories of a Cape Breton childhood

This week, the stories are written by students with the Halifax Community Learning Network. The story below was written by Diane Pinto, from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her story was previously published as an e-book on the Mount Saint Vincent University website, Publish It! You can check out this and more at: http://pub1.msvu.ca/.

Cape Breton Memories

by Diane Pinto

We lived here most of our lives. This river is a part of us. People come to visit this river from all over the world and to fish our famous salmon. It is also a great swimming hole.

The Carmichael homestead is my grandmother’s childhood home.

The photo shows Mom and Ralph on the same bike. Young Robert passed at six months and Ralph was the brother she never had.

In later years, Mom and I took walks many of times on Fielding Road. This road takes you up the mountain where they cut pulp. It has been giving work to Margaree men for many years.

Inverness County is a favourite place to see- so many different and beautiful fall colors. September colors are some of the best!

Behind Mom’s house it was so peaceful. A person could hear only the crickets, and that has its own beauty.

Margaree is surrounded by the mountains. No wonder my mother loved this place so much. I hope to bring my grandchildren there someday and swim with them like I did with Mom.

My mother and I lived in Baddeck for a short while. I enjoyed living in this beautiful town.

2009 is the last event my mother attended before her illness took over. It was my daughter’s wedding.

I took a picture of the Margaree Valley in 2007. Sixty years later it still feels the same and my mother resides once again in her valley.

Rest in peace Mom. We will remember you always.
