Story of the Week

March 11, 2002

This week, we are launching five stories written by students from Midland, Ontario. You can read some of their stories as well as hear them, with the audio player.

These students are all enrolled at the Midland Area Reading Council (MARC) . This year, MARC is celebrating its 20th anniversary. It is a community-based literacy program, doing mostly one-to-one tutoring, and some small group teaching as well as computer courses. MARC serves mainly Basic level students 1 & 2.

The following story was written by Joseph Carriere. Joseph has been with the Midland Area Reading Council for a year. He wants to be able to read to his young son, to read the Bible, and to write letters and stories. His confidence has increased, he reads out loud better, and he now sends emails to his family. He wants to learn all he can about computers and what they can offer him. He's really excited about seeing his story on the Internet!

Going away for holidays

by Joseph Carriere

Just after Christmas I went away with Julia on holidays. We went along the coast of lake Huron. We stopped in Owen Sound. Julia and I went shopping and spent money. We stayed two nights in Sarnia at the Ramada Inn and ate at Don Cherry's Grapevine. Then we went to Chatham and stopped at Pizza Hut. I Enjoyed the trip with my wife. We had a good couple of days to ourselves. It was lots of fun. We saw places we had never been before. Then we drove to Windsor and took the kids for supper. We stayed for a little while then took Ben to London and stayed at the Comfort Inn for the night. We drove home on Saturday morning.
