This week, we are launching five stories written by students from Midland, Ontario. You can read some of their stories as well as hear them, with the audio player.
These students are all enrolled at the Midland Area Reading Council (MARC) . This year, MARC is celebrating its 20th anniversary. It is a community-based literacy program, doing mostly one-to-one tutoring, and some small group teaching as well as computer courses. MARC serves mainly Basic level students 1 & 2.
The following story was written by Sue Knicely. Sue has been with the Midland & Area Reading Council (MARC) for about two years; she has a tutor and she is also participating in computer classes and a writing group. She loves to chat and meet people, and is an enthusiastic member of the MARC student group.
Alison , Raymond, my sister, and I went to Black Creek Pioneer Village. We did a lot of walking that day.
We went to a tinsmith shop where they make old metal cookie cutters, lanterns, pitchers and more! We went to Henry Snider's cider mill. We went to Roblin's Mill with a grinding machine for flour and grain. We went to the fire house to see an old fire wagon and fire pump.
We visited the Harness Shop and Saddlery where they make horse harnesses and saddles. They also make bridles.
The Laskay Emporium and Post office has old black and white newspapers and a printing machine.
We saw the doctor's house with an old tea table, old dishes, dry sink, wood storage box, and old wood burning stove. We saw the old dentist's chair.
We went in an old house and looked around and saw old oil lamps, old tables, old grandfather clock and an old cook stove.
We went to see how they make wood toys at the cabinet maker's. They showed us how to cook the glue to make old wood toys.
We went to a weaver's place. They showed us how to make place mats and blankets. They showed us how to card the wool, spin it and colour it with leaves and flowers. We saw a place were they make shoes for men and women and kids shoes too.
We had lunch with Alison at the Halfway House Inn and Restaurant.
We went to a place where they make horse shoes, wagon wheels, plows and tools.
We went to the one room school house to see the school bell, stove, wood desk, wood chairs and wood box.
If you ever go to Toronto, stop and visit Black Creek Pioneer Village. You will have fun.
