Story of the Week

April 22, 2002

This week, we are launching twelve stories written by students from The Learning Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. As a special event you can read some of the stories as well as hear them, with the audio player.

The Learning Centre is a community-based adult literacy and education program in Edmonton, Alberta. Whether we are drawn to the Centre to learn to write, to tutor reading, to facilitate, coordinate or do research, learning is at the centre of what we do.

The following story was written by Garrett Bullchild. Garrett was born in Edmonton. He has lived in Lethbridge, Alberta, New York, Vancouver and Regina.

Coming to The Learning Centre

by Garrett Bullchild

I saw Louis in the Boyle Street Drop-in. He was smoking cigarettes with friends. He was talking to me about The Learning Centre. So I talked to Mary about the school. I signed the form for The Learning Centre. I started on January 6, 2002.

On my first day at The Learning Centre I was nervous meeting people in the classes. I wanted to learn reading and writing, to catch up to my grade and help me reach my goals. I started volunteering at the Centre and helping other students in math and reading.

I bring spirit into people. I help them feel good about themselves.
