This week, we are launching twelve stories written by students from The Learning Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. As a special event you can read some of the stories as well as hear them, with the audio player.
The Learning Centre is a community-based adult literacy and education program in Edmonton, Alberta. Whether we are drawn to the Centre to learn to write, to tutor reading, to facilitate, coordinate or do research, learning is at the centre of what we do.
The following story was written by Yolande Herman. Yolande has been writing since she started coming to The Learning Centre. In 2001 the Centre published a collection of Yolande's stories called Then and Now. The book includes stories about Yolande's family and about growing up in northern Saskatchewan.

I grew up in Turner Lake, Saskatchewan. There were no schools, hospitals or any stores there. It was a very small place. Everybody spoke Chipweyan. Now all of the kids speak English. The place has changed.
Later I looked after my seven sisters and four brothers. I learned everything from my mom. That was my education. I learned English after I left home at age 18. I went to school later.
Since I moved to Edmonton I have wanted to learn to read and write. I started in 1995 at The Learning Centre. I was kind of shy. Now I can read and write a lot. I also speak up more.
