Story of the Week

April 22, 2002

This week, we are launching twelve stories written by students from The Learning Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. As a special event you can read some of the stories as well as hear them, with the audio player.

The Learning Centre is a community-based adult literacy and education program in Edmonton, Alberta. Whether we are drawn to the Centre to learn to write, to tutor reading, to facilitate, coordinate or do research, learning is at the centre of what we do.

The following poem was written by Holly. Holly is called Happy Holly because she is fun to be around. She is cheerful when the sun is out. She likes to ride her bike when the weather is nice. Holly has been coming to The Learning Centre for five years. She writes a lot and sometimes she writes poems. It makes her feel good to come to the Centre and write.

The Penny

by Holly

The penny is a traveller
It travels from town to town
It is the wanderer.
It never settles down.
From pocket to pocket
From hand to hand
From store to store
From bank to bank
It travels the world.
