This week, we are launching twelve stories written by students from The Learning Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. As a special event you can read some of the stories as well as hear them, with the audio player.
The Learning Centre is a community-based adult literacy and education program in Edmonton, Alberta. Whether we are drawn to the Centre to learn to write, to tutor reading, to facilitate, coordinate or do research, learning is at the centre of what we do.
The following story was written by Cindy Lingrell. Cindy grew up in Forestburg, Alberta, and is now independent and lives in Edmonton. She attends The Learning Centre and enjoys creative writing, reading and math. Cindy is very glad she came to the Centre.

I walk down the same street in my home town. I think back to when I was young. I remember how busy it seemed. People were coming and going from the grocery store, bank and post office. Everywhere, there were always people.
Now down the same street it is so different. The grocery store had change to a co-op store. The bank had become one of those box buildings, cold and unfriendly. The post office had gone somewhere else. I don't know if I could find it. There seemed to be few or no people around.
The trees and gardens are still there as always, but where had all the people gone? There seemed to be one or two walking down the street, but I knew nobody. Where had all the people gone?
Walk down the same street where I used to live for ten years and see beautiful trees. I always dreamed they would be beautiful to decorate at Christmas time.
