This week, we are launching twelve stories written by students from The Learning Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. As a special event you can read some of the stories as well as hear them, with the audio player.

The Learning Centre is a community-based adult literacy and education program in Edmonton, Alberta. Whether we are drawn to the Centre to learn to write, to tutor reading, to facilitate, coordinate or do research, learning is at the centre of what we do.

The following story was written by Ivan Nikoforuk. Ivan grew up in Edmonton and got his diploma there. He moved away from home at age 18. Ivan is single and very independent. His pastimes include drinking coffee and spending time with his mother.

My Favourite Place - Canada

by Ivan Nikoforuk

My favourite place is a long drive into the country, where the green forests transform me and release a power only here on earth. The beauty and magnificence eases my fears, giving me a gold lustre coat that cannot be penetrated. When I return, I am rejuvenated--there is no better feeling! Young and free is the ability to take on the world. We have that liberty in Canada!
